Addressing Common Concerns
Porcelain veneers are incredibly thin – about the thickness of a contact lens – and customized to match the shape and color of your natural teeth. Veneers can be used to address many types of aesthetic concerns, including:
- Stained teeth
- Worn or irregularly shaped teeth
- Proportionately small teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Slightly crooked teeth
Are Veneers Right for You?
In addition to having cosmetic concerns, in order to be considered for veneers you should have generally good dental health. While decay or gum disease will not necessarily prevent you from receiving veneers, Dr. Stahle will need to address these issues before you can undergo cosmetic treatment. Additionally, since the dentist must slightly alter the surface of your teeth to place veneers, you must have a sufficient amount of enamel for the procedure. Dr. Stahle will provide a complete consultation to determine your candidacy for veneers.
The Veneer Application Process
After the dentist has decided that veneers are right for you, you will discuss your aesthetic goals. Then she will create a personalized treatment plan, including full wax-ups, so you can see what your smile will look like after treatment. If you'd like, she can also make a mock-up to wear over your teeth, giving you an even better understanding of what your improved smile will look and feel like.
When you are ready to receive your veneers, Dr. Stahle will prep your teeth, removing a tiny amount of enamel to accommodate the porcelain. Often, she will administer local anesthesia before this step. If you are particularly anxious, she can also provide nitrous oxide. After removing all necessary enamel, she will take impressions of your teeth to send to an offsite dental lab. She will also give you temporary veneers to wear over the next few weeks as you wait for your permanent restorations.
Once your veneers are received from the state-of-the-art lab, you will come in to have them attached. Dr. Stahle will check the fit, make needed adjustments, and bond them in place. Once they are bonded, veneers are immediately functional. To protect your smile, you will need to wear a night guard to prevent erosion and tiny cracks.
If you are looking for the optimal way to enhance your smile, there are a number or reasons to choose porcelain veneers:
- Veneers can address several cosmetic issues at once, minimizing your time in the exam chair.
- The placement process is quick and convenient, yet the restorations can have a transformative effect on your entire appearance.
- Porcelain is translucent, so it reflects light naturally. It can also be color-matched to your smile, making veneers virtually indistinguishable from dental enamel.
- With proper dental hygiene and consistent use of your night guard, veneers can last for years.
